Whether you’re a seasoned chef or an aspiring cook, this recipe is sure to impress your taste buds and transport you to the heart of Italy.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 8 Servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 pound lean ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 jar marinara sauce (approx. 24 oz)
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
Salt and black pepper to taste
1 1/2 cups ricotta cheese
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
1 refrigerated pie crust (9-inch)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190°C).

In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the lean ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess grease.

Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic to the cooked beef. Sauté for a few minutes until the onion becomes translucent.

Stir in the jar of marinara sauce, dried basil, dried oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Remove from heat.

In a separate bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, shredded mozzarella cheese, and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix well.

Roll out the refrigerated pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish, pressing it against the sides.

Spread half of the cheese mixture evenly over the bottom of the pie crust.

Pour the beef and sauce mixture on top of the cheese layer.

Dollop the remaining cheese mixture over the beef mixture, spreading it to cover.

Fold and crimp the edges of the pie crust to enclose the filling.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Let the pie cool for a few minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley.

Notes

You can customize the spice level by adjusting the amount of red pepper flakes.
Feel free to add sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, or olives to the filling for extra flavor.
